Parking

Car park or parking is the term used to describe a space within which a stationary (parked) motor vehicle is stored. In town centers and other areas where a large volume of traffic may be expected it is certain that there will be car parks. Parking spaces may simply be a large, flat area of tarmac with parking bays, the area in which a car is to be parked being marked on the ground in a manner not dissimilar to road markings. Parking like this is common place outside supermarkets or large out of town shopping centers , however in towns where space is at a premium underground, or high-rise multi-storey car parks are often built to make the bet use of the space available. Many parking facilities will have priority spaces allowing for disabled people, or mothers with young children to park closer to their destination.

In many towns parking has become a problem due to the sheer volume of traffic and as a result visitors may find themselves struggling to find a parking space. It is for this reason that many councils will implement a park and ride scheme whereby visitors will park their cars in a large out of town car park and then be bussed into and then back from the town centre, alleviating congestion. Parking is also used by local councils and private firms as a method to generate revenue by charging people to leave their cars in parking facilities. In towns and cities where difficulty with parking is an issue then such businesses may be quite lucrative.
